The Importance of Social Networking for Bloggers

The Importance of Social Networking for Bloggers

When we first started The Style Rawr in 2010, blogging was relatively new in the UK. We were inspired by US super bloggers Rumi Neely of Fashion Toast and Natalie of Natalie Off Duty to create our own blog, but we didn’t have their expensive cameras or blog followers. However, we soon discovered that networking with brands via social media was a really good idea to get noticed and as a result we were given a lot of opportunities even as a small, new blog!

We started off by writing posts about our favourite brands and then sharing them via Twitter and Facebook. We’d do a quick Google search to find the brand’s official pages, and then tag them in our posts. By doing this we began to build a relationship with them and would often send them random tweets/comments about their new collections, or just interact with them about random things so we could get on their radar. This worked so well because we were genuinely passionate about what we were writing about and the brands we were reaching out to. A lot of companies also tweet/post about upcoming blog projects when they’re looking for new bloggers to work with, so it’s a good idea to make sure you’re following your favourites.

Within a few weeks of starting our blog, we were contacted by a few different brands asking if we’d like to feature their products. We were very lucky to be given opportunities so early on, but we do feel it was down to us putting ourselves ‘out there’ and our unique writing style! We’ve always written as if we’re chatting to our friends, to us it’s important all of our posts are fun and light-hearted. The Style Rawr is our creative outlet and we’ll only write about what we’re genuinely interested in, we don’t blog to get freebies because that isn’t what blogging is about, and we aren‘t afraid to say no to a blog collaboration if it doesn‘t fit. Getting to know brands and PR firms via social media is a great way to build a relationship, although we haven’t met many of the faces behind the Twitter accounts, we feel like we’re buddies.

Today, almost 4 years on, we still interact with our favourite brands via social media but because we use more social platforms, we now interact with them in even more places! Once a post has been published, we’ll tag the brands on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+ and Pinterest. We’ll also comment on their posts via all of these platforms. When a large company retweets or shares one of our blog posts, we definitely notice a surge in blog hits. A month ago, River Island regrammed one of our Instagram posts and we gained 100 followers within hours!

We’re still working on building our social media following but we currently have over 7,500 Twitter followers and 2500 Facebook fans. We’re self-confessed social media junkies but it’s only helped our blogging presence!

Jade and Tara are the blogging twosome behind The Style Rawr.

I think people underestimate the power of social networking especially in this new age. How did you amass the number of followers you have now?

    I totally agree!

Love this post, so useful to think about tagging companies. Thank you! xx

I couldn’t agree more, not only is social media a great way to get your blog out there and connect with brands you love, its an amazing way to meet other like-minded bloggers and talk about shared passions! I’ve even made friends for life through social media! A very powerful tool for bloggers!x
